Awareness of Legality of Abortion in India
There is extremely low awareness and information about the legality of abortion at the community level. Low knowledge results in women, particularly young women, often facing numerous barriers as well as going to unsafe providers. According to World Health Organisation (WHO) girls and young women (10-19 years) in developing countries undergo 2.2 to 4 million unsafe abortions every year and globally account for 70% of all hospitalizations from unsafe abortion. WHO further estimates that young women account for approximately 46% of unsafe abortion-related deaths every year.
Lack of knowledge about legality also contributes to significant delays in women seeking abortion. One study estimates that women might take upto a month on an average from the time they discover that they are pregnant to the time they actually seek termination.
