Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Program Coordinator provides both programmatic support and executive support in a one-on-one working relationship. The Coordinator organises and coordinates executive outreach and external relations efforts, manages special projects that are led by the Executive Director, and supports pressing and timely projects - across all program areas.

They must be creative and enjoy working within a small, entrepreneurial environment that is mission-driven, results-driven and community oriented. The ideal individual will have the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, with strong written and verbal communication skills in English, exceptional administrative and organisational skills, and the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities. They will have the ability to work independently on projects, from conception to completion, and must be able to work under pressure at times to handle a wide variety of activities and confidential matters with discretion. This position will give the Coordinator a birds-eye view of global feminist advocacy, organizational and institutional strengthening priorities, and require some substantive contributions around CREA’s major tracks of work around sexual rights and gender.

 

Scope and Responsibilities

Communications, Partnerships and Outreach

  • Works with the Programs and Communications teams to coordinate and develop content for the ED's external engagements and outreach activities.
  • Edits and completes first drafts for written communications to external stakeholders.
  • Follows up on contacts made by the ED and supports the cultivation of on-going relationships.
  • Communicates directly, and on behalf of the ED, with donors and partners on matters related to ED's programmatic initiatives, including writing acknowledgement letters from the ED to donors.
  • Drafts written content, including articles and blog posts, for the organization’s website and other online platforms.
  • Works closely with the Communications team to coordinate and refine programmatic input for the organizational Annual Report.
  • Works closely with the Resource Development team to support the development of concept notes and proposals as needed.
  • Manages and bolsters the ED’s online social media presence and engagement.

Executive Support

  • Provides leadership to build and maintain relationships between the ED and key external stakeholders that are crucial to the success of the organisation, including donors, community and global partners, academics and intra-organizational.
  • Drafts correspondence, assists the ED with writing/editing new program documentation, prepares presentations/documents to support the ED’s participation in panels and meetings, and other related tasks that facilitate the ED's ability to effectively lead the organisation.
  • Researches, prioritises, and follows up on incoming issues and concerns addressed to the ED, and determines appropriate course of action, referral, or response.
  • Works closely and effectively with the ED to keep her well informed of upcoming commitments and responsibilities, following up appropriately. Acts as a "barometer," having a sense for the issues taking place in the environment and keeping the ED updated.
  • Provides some leadership and recommendations around supporting organizational strengthening and internal systems, as related to ED’s functions and support.
  • Hands-on management of a variety of special projects for the ED, some of which will have organisational impact, ensuring deliverables and timelines are met.
  • Must have strong technology background to support ED in maintenance of emails, schedules, information systems and selected external communications products.

Programmatic and Strategic Support

  • Identifies new and/or better leveraged opportunities for CREA’s participation in special events, conferences and advocacy campaigns to help advance the organisation’s goals
  • Plays a supportive role in conceptualizing and developing high-quality, high-impact programs at the national, regional and global levels.
  • Plays a supportive role in strategic planning processes by coordinating and contributing to organizational-wide discussions on CREA’s core areas of work.

Liaison for Executive Team and Leadership

  • Supports communication and coordination between the ED and Program Directors, across all program areas, representing the ED’s interests when required.
  • Represents the ED on various global Working Groups and Advisories, and channels information back to the organization as necessary.
  • Creates smooth functioning of communications on programs and new initiatives held by the ED related to advisors, external experts and senior leadership team.

Experience Requirements

  • Strong work tenure: 5-7 years of experience supporting C-Level Executives, preferably in a non-profit organization.
  • Experience with non-profits from the global South and/or international development organisations, preferably with some experience working in multiple regions and contexts.
  • A deep understanding of and experience with rights related to sexuality and/or gender, and sexual and reproductive rights, and a commitment to advancing these rights.
  • Experience and interest in internal and external communications, partnership development, and fundraising.
  • Experience working remotely and with teams across multiple geographies preferred.

Terms of Reference: Consultant to Develop Animation Video(s) to Advance Sex Workers’ Rights

 

The Count Me In! (CMI!) consortium is a partnership led by Mama Cash, including the Red Umbrella Fund (RUF) together with the Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID), CREA, Just Associates (JASS), the Urgent Action Fund1 with the Dutch gender platform WO=MEN as a strategic partner for lobbying and advocacy. The joint initiative seeks to support and invest in the autonomy and capacity of women, girls and trans people to act for the prevention and elimination of gender-based violence (GBV), for economic justice, and for sustainable resourcing of women’s rights and women-led organisations and movements.

 

Purpose of Consultancy

Based on a vast amount of available research and materials about sex workers’ rights, CMI! consolidated the most relevant information to use to promote sex workers’ rights as human rights and an understanding of sex work as work to develop 7 factsheets on crucial aspects of sex worker rights – law, funding, migration, trafficking, violence, women’s rights, and COVID impact. CMI is now looking to create an animation video(s) based on these to translate the content in a catchy and informative audio- visual format. This will be a part of many materials developed on sex worker rights that will build a visible, public social media campaign to highlight feminist approaches to sex workers’ rights. The consultant will develop and design campaign materials to be used by CMI! Members and our broader community of partners to respond to efforts to claw back sex workers’ rights (such as the recent campaign hosted by the governments of Sweden and France and mobilization by other anti-sex workers’ rights donors), and pro-actively promote a rights affirming feminist approach to sex work. The materials will be designed specifically to: strengthen alliances and support within feminist and allied movements, educate and encourage funders to fund sex workers’ rights and activism, and to support the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to continue funding and speaking out in support of sex workers’ rights.

The campaign materials will be informed by existing evidence, amplifying sex workers' stories and good practices, and making strong and relevant (to the specific audience) arguments to advance sex workers rights.

Position Background

CREA is seeking a Manager – Programs and Innovations, for its programs in East Africa. The person will be responsible for developing ideas and plans across CREA’s four Strategic Initiatives in the region, along with team members in the region and at CREA; and enrich and enhance thematic work with knowledge and nuance of local politics and language. This position will be highly dynamic and requires excellent program management skills, leadership skills, analytical thinking and decision-making ability. Other important aspects of this position include supporting strategy development and program monitoring, evaluation and learning, assisting in resource development vis-à-vis the programs and representing the organisation in different fora. The Manager – Programs and Innovations (East Africa) will be expected to work closely with other Directors and Managers as well.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Strategy

  • Develop ideas and plans to deepen the impact of CREA’s programs, using one or more of the four strategies in the geography.
  • Enrich and enhance themes with knowledge and nuance of local politics and language.
  • Identify cross cutting and intersectional aspects from within geography.

 

Program Development and Implementation

  • Lead development, implementation, and supervision of high-quality programs in East Africa.
  • Strengthen and grow the on-going work in Kenya and Uganda.
  • Explore and grow the work in Rwanda.
  • Ensure program documentation, management and reporting is of the highest quality.
  • Manage and co-implement the Feminist Leadership, Movement Building and Rights Institute (East Africa). This includes working closely with core faculty and other staff at CREA.
  • Develop annual work plans and budgets.

 

Partnership Management

  • Strengthen and grow existing partnerships, including that with Embassies.
  • Build relationships with civil society, government officials and policy makers and other external stakeholders, as necessary, within concerned geographical area.

 

Advocacy

  • Identify advocacy opportunities for CREA’s work in the region.
  • Implement advocacy plans.

 

Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning

  • Analyze the data and identify successes and gaps.
  • Oversee design and implementation of necessary improvements based on data and learning.
  • Ensure program progress and learnings are consistently documented.

 

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Represent CREA and its work to relevant audiences as required.
  • Assist in writing proposals.
  • Ensure good quality and on-time donor reporting vis-à-vis programs.
  • Contribute significantly to annual reports and organizational work plans.
  • Contribute to CREA’s Strategic Planning process.

Overview:

CREA seeks a Program Coordinator to support CREA’s global, regional and local projects on sex workers’ rights and on sexual and gender diversity. The Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating, supporting and strengthening CREA’s work to increase voice and visibility of marginalized women, trans and gender non-binary people, preventing and addressing gender-based violence and enhancing security, within a broad framework of sexual rights.  They will provide overall coordination and support for program development, management, operations and reporting.  They will work closely with Program Directors, program staff, administrative staff and external advisors to strengthen and sustain CREA’s work on sex workers’ rights and on sexual and gender diversity.

 

Responsibilities:

Coordination

  • Plays a supportive role in the organization to develop and implement high-quality programs at national, regional and global levels.
  • Under the supervision of the Program Directors, works closely with program staff, national, regional and global partners, and external advisors and stakeholders to develop and implement programming (advocacy, capacity strengthening, knowledge generation and public education), evaluation and reporting.

Advocacy

  • Develops and supports broad-based advocacy across national, regional (primarily, though not exclusively, in South Asia and East Africa) and global advocacy spaces, including the UN, to influence the advocacy narrative on sex workers’ rights as human rights, and on sexual and gender diversity in these forums. This will include capacity building for advocacy with various sex workers rights, LGBTIQ and gender diverse organisations and networks; technical support for reporting to various policy and treaty monitoring bodies and supporting meaningful inclusion of disability rights activists to participate in these processes.
  • Identifies new opportunities for CREA’s and our partners participation in advocacy campaigns, special events, conferences, partnerships, and other international and regional forums that will help advance the advocacy goals articulated above.

Convening

  • Supports CREA to convene internal and cross-movement dialogues based on intersectional rights issues bringing together activists from different movements to broaden understandings around criminalization, sex workers’ rights, rights related to sexual and gender diversity, sexuality and disability, among others, and to forge partnerships and alliances to advance new forms of understanding on challenging criminalization of sexuality, identity and bodies.
  • Develops proposals and coordinate panels, presentations and other relevant programming in relevant arenas, such as global and regional HIV, feminist, SOGIESC, disability, SRHR and gatherings and conferences.
  • Supports engagement of sex workers, LBTIQ and gender diverse individuals and groups in these arenas.

Analytical tool building and information production

  • Supports the creation of tools and produce information that can be used by activists to bridge fault lines with other social movements, provide an intersectional analysis on critical rights issues and support transformative advocacy to advance this work.
  • In particular, coordinates public education and social media campaigning on these issues.

 

Organisational Responsibilities

  • Supports Director, Global Programs and other Program Directors and Senior Management in the development and implementation of annual activity plans and budgets, working closely with all program staff
  • Assists in planning and facilitation of CREA led events e.g. rethink evenings and campaigns
  • Supports grant management related functions including reporting to the donor
  • Supports development of proposals, concept notes and supports the Resource Development team as needed.
  • Works closely with the Communications team in highlighting the program on different social media platforms
  • Helps to develop and represent CREA's work at meetings, forums and conferences at the national, regional and global levels.

 

Key Qualifications

  • Graduate (Master's Degree preferred, or equivalent experience) in the area of /social science/ human rights/ international development with relevant issues based experience on advancing the rights of related to sexuality, gender, and/or sex work.
  • 3-5 years of experience.
  • Experience with NGOs from the global South and/or international development organizations with experience working in multiple regions and contexts.
  • Strong understanding of and experience with sex workers’ rights, rights related to sexuality and/or gender, sexual and reproductive rights, challenging criminalization, cross-movement collaboration, and a commitment to advancing these rights.
  • Excellent writing skills in English and strong communication skills with both internal and external audiences.
  • Detail oriented and takes initiative with an ability to self-motivate and produce high-quality products.
  • Committed to ongoing professional learning and knowledge sharing with CREA staff.

Submission to the Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women - COVID-19 and the Increase of Domestic Violence against Women

In response to the call for submissions by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women, their causes and consequences, CREA and its partners submitted the following information on the increase of gender-based violence against women and domestic violence in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

CREA is a global feminist human rights organization led by feminists in the global South. We work to advance the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of people everywhere, and our work centers those who have historically been on the margins of mainstream feminist movements.

CREA, with input from 17 of organizations and experts, highlight intersecting forms of violence faced by women with disabilities (WWD), lesbian women, bisexual women, transgender and queer persons (LBTQ), gender non-confirming persons (GNC), and sex workers. These are the communities who are rarely visible in data on violence against women.

This submission highlights the increase in violence against women and gender-based violence across South Asia and East Africa, with specific case studies from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Uganda, and Kenya. It also seeks to emphasize gender-based violence as the pervasive and systemic human rights violation that the Special Rapporteur understands it to be.
