Gender-based violence (GBV) remains embedded in our societies. Responding to this ugly and often brutal manifestation of patriarchal systems has been a foundational goal for CREA.
We promote a rights-based and rights-affirming approach to the issue with a focus on well-being and security.
As with all aspects of our work, our GBV-focused efforts have taken many shapes – programs, campaigns, training, and more – and have operated at multiple levels – from grassroots interventions up to and through global consortiums.
This section describes five examples of our work in this field.
The challenges resulting from criminalization of sexuality and identity are gaining increased attention within the women’s rights, human rights and social justice communities.
CREA is a part of the Count Me In! consortium (CMI!), an initiative with Mama Cash, Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID), Just Associates (JASS) and Urgent Action Fund representing Africa, the US and Latin America.
The FON consortium comprises International Federation for Family Planning – African Regional Bureau as the project lead, CREA, Empow’Her, International Federation for Human Rights and Médecins du Monde France as the project owner. It seeks to build the capacity of feminist movements and address gender-based violence.
CREA allies with, collaborates with, and supports sex worker-led collectives, unions and groups both nationally and globally to demand for full decriminalization of all aspects of consensual sex work and human rights for all people in sex work.
